IATA Forecasts Slight Increase in Airline Profits in 2025: Opportunities and Challenges for Cargo Transport
According to the latest financial report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 2025 will see global airline profits reach approximately $36 billion, a slight increase from the previous year’s $32.4 billion. However, alongside the optimistic signals from passenger transport, the air cargo sector is facing several worrying challenges.
Falling Fuel Prices – A Key Driver of Growth
IATA states that one of the key factors driving overall industry profits is the expected 13% decrease in jet fuel prices, to an average of $86 per barrel. This helps reduce the overall operating costs of airlines, especially given the still thin net profit margins.
Passenger Transport Accelerates, But Cargo Transport Stagnates
Revenue from passenger transport is projected to reach a record $693 billion, thanks to a high seat occupancy rate (84%) and abundant passenger numbers. However, the freight sector recorded the opposite trend:
- Freight revenue decreased by 4.7% to $142 billion.
- Demand growth slowed to only 0.7%, compared to 11.3% in 2024.
- Freight yields fell by 5.2%, due to prolonged trade tensions and supply chain disruptions.
In particular, the lead time for new aircraft is up to 14 years, and shortages of spare parts and engines have led to the grounding of numerous aircraft, significantly impacting transport capacity and aircraft leasing prices.

Opportunities for Logistics Businesses and Transport Partners
Although the global air cargo market is under pressure, this is also a time for logistics businesses like Interlink to:
- Optimize supply chains and increase efficiency through flexible coordination between air transport and other modes of transport.
- Leveraging the green transition trend and anticipating the increasing demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which is projected to double by 2025.
- Investing in technology and value-added services to maintain a competitive edge amidst high competition and declining yields.
The aviation industry in 2025 is projected to experience a positive but uneven recovery, with clear opportunities in the passenger sector and significant challenges in cargo transport. As a crucial link in the global transportation and logistics chain, Interlink is committed to supporting businesses in adapting flexibly, optimizing costs, and improving supply chain efficiency during this period of significant change.
