NEARLY 1 MILLION TONS OF CASHEWS FROM CAMBODIA ENTER VIETNAM: A KEY LINK IN THE GLOBAL EXPORT SUPPLY CHAIN
Vietnam continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s major cashew processing and export hubs. Notably, a significant share of the raw materials used by the industry comes from abroad, with Cambodia emerging as Vietnam’s most important source of supply.
According to data from the first seven months of 2026:
• Vietnam’s cashew exports reached approximately US$2.9 billion, up 3.3% year-on-year.
• Cashew imports totaled around US$3.2 billion, an increase of 10%.
• Vietnam imported nearly 1 million tons of cashews from Cambodia, worth approximately US$1.7 billion, up 24% year-on-year.
• Cambodia accounted for approximately 54% of Vietnam’s total cashew import volume and 56% of its import value.
Why does Vietnam import such a large volume of raw cashews?
Vietnam’s domestic supply of raw cashews is currently insufficient to meet the needs of its processing industry. As a result, Vietnamese businesses import raw cashews from Cambodia and African countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, and Nigeria, before carrying out processes including steaming, shelling, processing, grading, and packaging for export to international markets.
Cambodia has one particularly important advantage: geographical proximity.
The short distance allows raw cashews to be transported to Vietnam more efficiently, helping reduce logistics lead times and costs while ensuring a stable supply of raw materials for processing facilities.
In addition, Vietnam continues to apply preferential trade mechanisms to certain goods originating from Cambodia under the Bilateral Trade Promotion Agreement for 2025–2026.
The real story lies behind these import figures.
Importing raw materials does not simply mean that Vietnam is dependent on foreign goods. In the cashew industry, it is an essential part of the export value chain.
Raw cashews enter Vietnam → are processed → gain added value → become cashew kernels and other cashew products → and are exported to major markets such as the United States, China, and Europe.
In other words, logistics capabilities, raw material sourcing, and processing capacity are closely interconnected, creating the competitiveness of Vietnam’s cashew industry in the global market.
Behind every container of raw materials lies an entire supply chain.
From sourcing in Cambodia, cross-border transportation and customs clearance to warehousing, processing, and finally loading finished products onto vessels for export — every link directly affects costs, delivery time, and business competitiveness.
As demand for raw materials continues to grow and export markets expand, building a stable, optimized, and seamless supply chain will remain essential for Vietnam’s cashew industry to maintain its position on the global export map.
The raw materials may begin in Cambodia, but the value is created in Vietnam and reaches markets around the world.
