Wave of Layoffs in the Transportation Industry in California and Texas
The freight industry in two major US states – California and Texas – is witnessing a wave of widespread layoffs, affecting more than 1,000 workers in just the past week. Major players like UPS, FedEx, Amazon, and several others have announced downsizing plans to restructure and adapt to market fluctuations.
UPS: Laying Off 355 Workers in California
United Parcel Service (UPS) plans to cut two shifts at its West Sacramento warehouse, resulting in 355 job losses starting in mid-July.
According to The Sacramento Bee, UPS calls this part of “the largest network restructuring in the company’s history.” Previously, in April, the company announced plans to cut approximately 20,000 jobs and close 73 facilities across the United States before the end of 2024.
FedEx: 305 Jobs Affected in Texas
FedEx Supply Chain Logistics and Electronics announced it will lay off 305 employees at its logistics center in North Fort Worth, Texas.
The reason is believed to be that a major customer has switched to using the services of another third-party logistics (3PL) provider. The center will continue to operate with approximately 275 remaining employees, and the layoffs are expected to be completed by October 25th.
F&S Produce West: 255 Jobs at Risk of Loss
F&S Produce West LLC, a company specializing in the distribution of agricultural products and food, plans to cut 255 jobs at its facility located in southeast Houston.
The company has not yet announced the specific reasons and has not confirmed whether the facility will continue operating after the layoffs.
L&T Precision: Closing California Facility
L&T Precision, a manufacturer for the aerospace and defense industries, will close a facility in Poway, California, and lay off 81 employees on August 1st.
A company representative has not yet officially responded to this decision.
Amazon: Laying Off 52 Employees at Sunnyvale
Technology giant Amazon plans to lay off 52 employees at four facilities in Sunnyvale, California.
Among them are 33 from the Lab126 research center, which develops technology devices, and 19 from fulfillment centers.
Amazon has not announced the specific reasons for this round of layoffs.
This wave of layoffs reflects the immense pressure transportation and logistics businesses are facing in restructuring, cost-saving, and maintaining competitiveness. In a volatile market, this could just be the beginning of a series of far-reaching adjustments across the industry.
