Overview of Cat Lai Port – Interlink and Services at the Port

Information about Cat Lai Port

Cat Lai Port, also known as Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port (TCCL), is located on the Dong Nai River and is one of the key ports in the Ho Chi Minh City port system, managed by Tan Cang Saigon Corporation, Ministry of National Defence. Cat Lai Port is 43 miles from the Vung Tau pilot station and has a berth depth of 12.5m.

Cat Lai Port is currently the largest and most modern international container port in Vietnam, located in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City. It ranks among the top 25 ports in the world, with a container import/export market share of over 90% in the South and nearly 50% nationwide.

History of Cat Lai Port Development

With over 150 years of history and outstanding contributions to the country’s economic development, Saigon Port was awarded the title of Hero of Labor by the President of Vietnam for its outstanding achievements from 1986 to 1995. This was part of the cause of building Socialism and defending the Fatherland.

This recognition is a testament to the efforts and achievements of Saigon Port in serving the country’s economic development. It is also a source of pride for all employees and staff of Saigon Port in building and developing the largest seaport system in Vietnam.

Cat Lai Port Scale

Cat Lai Port was built in several phases, starting from June 1996 to 2002, with an initial area of approximately 170,000 square meters, including two 150m berths, capable of accommodating ships with a deadweight tonnage of over 20,000 DWT. At the same time, Cat Lai collaborated with the city to build interprovincial road 25 from Hanoi Highway to Cat Lai ferry to attract customers.

Cat Lai is currently the largest and most modern international container port in Vietnam, with an annual throughput ranking among the top 21 largest ports in the world. Currently, Tan Cang Cat Lai provides services including: port operations, logistics (cargo transportation at Cat Lai port, warehousing and storage, warehouse rental…), transportation, and maritime economics.

The total area of the port is currently 60 hectares, including a 450,000 m2 container yard and 6 receiving and storage warehouses. The wharf has a total length of 2,040m, including 9 berths and 1 barge berth. The water depth in front of the port is measured at 12.5m, allowing for vessels with a tonnage of up to 45,000 tons.

Inside the port, there are 3 terminal areas A, B, and C (formerly Phu Huu Port). The berth area has a capacity of 96,800 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit – standard 20-foot containers).

Operations at Cat Lai Port

Cat Lai Port can be said to be the busiest container port in Vietnam. Currently, the port is operating beyond its designed capacity of 2.5 million TEU, with approximately 5.5 million TEU of goods cleared annually. Currently, the port handles over 92% of the import and export volume through ports in the Southern region, accounting for nearly 50% of the national output and 25% of the domestic maritime transport market share.

Another issue of concern to the Ho Chi Minh City government is the volume of vehicles entering and exiting the port. On average, 16,000-18,000 vehicles transport goods to and from Cat Lai Port daily, sometimes exceeding 20,000 on peak days. Meanwhile, the road system around the port area, as well as the ring road system, has not developed synchronously, leading to traffic congestion. This places significant pressure on urban planning, the road transport sector, the logistics sector, and the infrastructure surrounding the port.

According to statistics, Cat Lai Port processes customs clearance for 33,000 businesses annually with over 500,000 customs declarations. Import and export turnover through Cat Lai Port alone reached 30 billion USD, generating over 46,000 billion VND in revenue, accounting for 35% of the total revenue of Ho Chi Minh City Customs.
