OOCL Spends Over $3 Billion to Order 14 Methanol-Powered Supercarriers – Expanding Fleet, Towards Global Green Shipping

OOCL Invests Heavily in Sustainable Development Strategy

OOCL – one of the world’s leading container shipping companies – has just signed a $3.08 billion contract to build 14 new methanol-fueled container ships. This is a strategic move to expand its fleet and clearly demonstrate its commitment to green and sustainable shipping.

The ships will be built at two key factories of COSCO Shipping

The new super-ships will be constructed at two factories belonging to the parent company COSCO Shipping:

  • Nantong Factory
  • Dalian Factory

Each ship is valued at approximately $220 million, this project is part of a plan to modernize and “green” the global shipping fleet.

Methanol Technology – A Step Forward in Decarbonization

OOCL’s new container ships will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol – an environmentally friendly alternative fuel increasingly favored in the maritime industry. The use of methanol significantly reduces CO₂ emissions, aligning with increasingly stringent environmental regulations and global customer expectations.

OOCL and its Long-Term Strategy with COSCO Shipping

OOCL is currently a subsidiary of Orient Overseas (International), with COSCO Shipping holding the majority stake. Investing in methanol-fueled ships not only expands operational scale but also represents a long-term step in a sustainable logistics development strategy, contributing to a new era for the shipping industry: more efficient, greener, and smarter.
